Introduction
Before the lessons students will receive materials to get acquainted with what they will learn about electric energy and electric environmental pollution (teacher uses the Padlet.com application). Students will read materials (textbook, articles from different online magazines) and see videos about producing and using the electric energy. In class, they do practical experiments (making different generators and simple electrical circuits, observing and measuring the electricity consumption); students reflect and identify the positive and negative effects of electricity consumption; pupils read information and identify the negative effects of using the electrical appliances on the environment and on their own health. Students work in group, express their opinions and cooperate in realizing Prezzi or Powtoon presentations, making e-books, posters and mind maps.
Process
Lesson 1 (organized using Flipped classroom methodology) a) - Teacher sends to students the videos (using padlet.com – links no. 1,2,3,4) and a list of key words helping them to structure the new information: generator, magnet, electromagnetism induction, turbine, hydro-power, electric and magnetic fields, etc.. - Students read and try to understand the materials. They have to organize the new information to create a mind map about Electricity (link no. 5) using https://www.matchware.com/ or other software. b) - Teacher organizes reading groups in class for explaining the new information about electric energy. Use the textbook - Physics, 8, Radical publishing house, Authors: Gabriela Turcitu & others. - Students work in groups and do practical experiments (make different generators and simple electrical circuits with different consumers: electric bulb, electric motor; measure the electricity consumption of different consumers), reflect and compare with what they have seen in videos. c) Evaluation: Project activity: Students work in groups and make a poster about The importance of electric energy in daily life using https://www.aurasma.com/ Lesson 2 Environmental pollution caused by electrical equipment; Ways to reduce electric energy used in home and school. Activities: 1. Teacher organizes students in 4 groups and sends the materials for studying (links no. 6, 7, 8). 2. Students read the materials, reflect, collaborate and have to do specific tasks: Group A – creates a Prezzi presentation about negative effects of using the electrical appliances on the environment; Group B – creates a Powtoon presentation about the negative effects of using the electrical appliances on their own health; Group C – creates a book with tips for reducing the electric energy consumption in home using a Book Creator app. (Story jumper or Pixton comic maker); Group D – creates a book with tips for reducing the electric energy consumption in school using a Book Creator app. (Story jumper or Pixton comic maker); 3. Evaluation: students present their work, share ideas, receive appreciations and recommendations.
Learning Objectives
- to read and analyze various information (videos, textbook, articles) for understanding what electricity is, how it can be produced;
- to put in practice their new knowledge doing different experiments;
- to organize the ideas and identify the negative effects of electricity on the environment and on human health;
- to think critically and find ways to reduce their electricity consumption at home/school;
- to improve their reading skills (English and Romanian);
- to develop their digital competencies (using different software or applications);
Tools & Equipment
- Tablets, video projector, laptop
- Different application: Powtoon, Prezzi, Padlet.com
