Introduction

In this lesson students will recreate their favourite scene from the chosen book using the coding tool Scratch. It will then be saved to the Scratch website and added to The Living Library. This lesson is a great example of using digital tools to engage students and enhance the literary experience.

Process

  1. Students should work in pairs.
  2. Each pair choose their favourite scene from the book they are reading (or the teacher can offer some options of scenes for them to choose from).
  3. Plan which assets are needed to recreate the scene in Scratch (background, characters, sounds)
  4. Gather the required assets
  5. Log in to the Scratch website or open the Scratch program on the computer
  6. In Scratch add the background, characters and other assets
  7. Use the block functions in Scratch to recreate the scene (show background, animate characters, add speech bubbles, add audio).
  8. Save the completed scene
  9. Share the scene so it published on the Scratch website
  10. Open the public page of the completed scene and Copy the link (URL)
  11. Log in to The Living Library and open the relevant book.
  12. Paste the URL to the book stream to embed it for others members to see.

Learning Objectives

  • To learn how to plan a story
  • To practice using block-based coding
  • To learn how to show media via The Living Library.

Tools & Equipment

  • Internet-connected computer
  • Physical copy of one of the books from The Living Library

Useful Documents

Conclusion

On completion of this lesson students will have demonstrated that they have read the relevant scene in the book and can recreate it. At the same time students will develop their skills in block coding.
